On Friday 15th August, a ceremony was held by the Clock Tower in Mere to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day — the day that marked the end of the Second World War in 1945.
The event was organised by Stewart Walker and the service led by Revd. Michael Molano. At exactly 12 noon, as the town clock chimed, local bugler Mary Burfitt played the Last Post, signalling the start of a two-minute silence to honour those who served and sacrificed during the conflict.
Wreaths were laid by Kit Stallard on behalf of the Army, Cllr Sandra Catley representing Mere Town Council, and Wiltshire Councillor George Jeans.
